PSYCLEPATHS GO SOUTH ! - 28/09/2009

3,000 Mile Charity Cycle Ride

WHY?

Koch Gomo school is located in Northern Uganda and was devastated during the Civil War.  Many of the Children are orphans or were kidnapped by the rebel armies and forced to fight as Child Soldiers.  Despite suffering horrendous trauma, the children are keen to learn and this project aims to give them with what they need above all else; a chance to give themselves a sustainable future.

WHAT?

At present many of the children have to walk 15-miles to school and back each day.  The project has already begun to build dormitory blocks and to re-establish a safe water supply, lifting the school back out of its Shanty Town environment. Funds from this year’s event are targeted to build weather tight classroom facilities and a working farm attached to the school.  As well as making the school more self sufficient this will provide a valuable education in self-sufficient farming so that the children and their future families are able to support themselves.

WHO?

All of the cyclists are volunteers giving their time to train and cycle the 3,300 mile route in five 1-week legs.  Nick Bevan, a trustee of the Cleansheet Foundation, will be cycling the entire route with other volunteers raising £5,000 each for the 600 mile leg they cycle. The Cleansheet Foundation is working in partnership with African Revival, to ensure the most effective application of funds raised to safeguard the long term future of the project.  Within the UK the Foundations other partner, Hartpury College, will bring specialist expertise in Agricultural practice and will ensure that the farm is established and run in a fully sustainable manner.  For more information please visit the partner’s websites at:-

WHEN?

The Cycle ride will begin on 29 August 2009 from Hartpury College in Gloucester.  Over the course of the next 4-weeks it will ride through the UK, Northern Europe and down to Athens.  For security reasons the group will then fly to Entebbe for the last leg cycling the 600 miles to the School itself.
